WATERTOWN — Dick’s Sporting Goods officials cut the ribbon on their new store in Towne Center Plaza on Friday morning.
The store officially opened last week but is having a celebration of sorts this weekend to mark the grand opening of the store.
Some people were lined up for about an hour before the doors opened with the line stretching around the store.
Ben Ramer of Watertown was in line for about 30 minutes before the store opened. He said he is looking forward to seeing the athletes and celebrities that will be coming to the store.
Ramer said he thinks the store looks nicer compared to the one at the mall, based on the brochures he saw.
“I’m excited to see what this new Dick’s looks like,” he said.
On Friday, John Wallace, formerly of the New York Knicks, was at the store from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Jim Boeheim, the former head coach for Syracuse University’s Men’s Basketball Team will be there from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday and Donovan McNabb, the former Syracuse Orange and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback will be at the store from noon until 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
They will be available to sign autographs or items purchased in the store the day of the event and meet fans. There will be 150 wristbands distributed starting at 9 a.m. for Friday’s and Saturday’s appearances. For Sunday, the wristbands will begin being given out at 10 a.m.
Dick’s says the wristbands are required to attend the appearances and get an autograph. They will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.
